Getting To Know Our Team Members: Spotlight On Dr. Mike Brooke!
Our goal is ALWAYS remarkable, one-to-one patient care here at Eyecare Center of Madison… Thanks to our amazing team members!
Today, we’d like to tell you a little bit about one of the awesome people who helps make this possible: Dr. Mike Brooke!
A Little About Dr. Mike
Dr. Mike was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest near Seattle, Washington. He attended Pacific University College of Optometry in Forest Grove, Oregon where he met and became good friends with Madison natives and newlyweds Monty and Liz Friedow. He returned to practice optometry in the Seattle area for about 10 years; then in 1993 he and his family ventured east and he joined Dr. Friedow’s practice in Madison.
Dr. Friedow had battled recurring bouts of cancer from the age of 16, and after 20 years of fighting he passed away at the age of 36 in 1994. Despite the distance from family in the Pacific Northwest, Mike stayed on to make his home in Madison with his wife Artyce and their children Lee and Matthew. The Brooke family suffered a tragic loss of their younger son Matthew in 2011, but Matt left two wonderful grandchildren—Jonathan and Nora, currently ages 7 and 5—who are the delight of their lives. Mike and Artyce enjoy spending as much time as possible chasing after and hanging out with Lee, Jonathan and Nora.
We recently put Dr. Mike in the hot seat and asked him some questions so you can get to know him better…
When you’re not here working, what are your favorite things to do?
In his free time Mike also enjoys golf, tennis, racquetball and hiking, and is planning a hike with family and friends into the Grand Canyon this fall. He also enjoys reading, especially John Grisham novels, of which his favorite to date is The Last Testament. He is currently reading The Devil in the White City, a historical true crime novel about an unspeakably evil serial killer who perpetrated his acts before and during the Chicago World’s Fair and Columbian Exposition of 1893. He likes too many movies to single one out as his overall favorite, but he includes Braveheart and It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World among his top ten.
What do you like to do to give back to the community?
Dr. Mike has served on the boards of numerous local non-profit organizations, including the DSU Foundation, Lake Area Improvement Corporation, Bethel Community Capital Campaign, Madison Area Career Learning Center, and Trinity Lutheran Church. He has participated in five charitable VOSH eyecare missions in central Mexico, and what he loves most about his job is getting to know his patients and their families, and helping them to enjoy good eye health and better vision!
